چکیده

The first operation of GEM gas gain elements in negative ion gas mixtures is reported. Gains up to several thousand were obtained from single-stage GEMs in CS 2 vapor at low pressure, and in mixtures of CS 2 with Argon and Helium, some near 1 bar total pressure.

Drift velocity and longitudinal diffusion measurements are reported for a Negative Ion TPC (NITPC) operating with Helium + CS 2 gas mixtures at total pressures from 160 to 700 torr. Longitudinal diffusion at the thermal-limit was observed for drift fields up to at least 700 V/cm in all gas mixtures tested. The results are of particular interest in connection with mechanical simplification of Da...

The GEM photomultiplier operated with noble gas mixtures

We present the results of detailed investigations of the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM)-based photomultiplier, consisting of a solid CsI photocathode coupled to a cascade of GEM elements. The detector is "lled with non-ageing mixtures based on noble gases: Ar, Ne, Ar#Ne, Ar#Xe, Ar#CH 4 and Ar#N 2 . Very high gas gains, reaching 106, and rather fast anode pulses, of a width of 10 ns, were observe...

Single Electron Detection with GEM

Sensitivity to single electrons is requested in detectors based on the electron counting technique, measuring very low radiation-deposited energies. It is also required in novel large-area gaseous photomultipliers, employing solid photocathodes and gaseous electron multipliers. The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) has been considered for these applications, and we report on its properties when ope...

Further studies on the gain properties of a Gas Electron Multiplier with a Micro-Induction Gap Amplifying Structure (GEM-MIGAS) aimed at low-energy X-ray detection

A Gas Electron Multiplier with Micro-Induction Gap Amplifying Structure (GEM-MIGAS) is formed when the induction gap of the GEM is set between 50 and 100 mm using kapton pillars spaced at regular intervals. This configuration combines the properties of a GEM and Micromegas, allowing operation in tandem to generate high charge gains. We measured the essential operational parameters of this syste...

Measurement of Carbon Disulfide Anion Diffusion in a TPC

The Directional Recoil Identification From Tracks (DRIFT) detector has recently been proposed [?] to search for dark matter. This detector is unique in that it drifts negative ions, instead of electrons, in a time projection chamber (TPC). A detailed description of the operation, motivation, and other uses of a negative ion TPC (NITPC) can be found in [?]. Briefly, an electronegative component ...
